Wishful Drinking is the living, breathing stage version of Carrie Fisher’s memorable book. The legendary actress and author unravels her convoluted life before an amazed audience, who sit and thank their stars such things had never happened to them. The secret is in the sensational – Wishful Drinking tickets are a hot commodity right now, because everyone wants to hear the juicy details not just from Fisher’s personal life, but also the other huge celebs she outs as she stumbles through this extraordinary story. Wishful Drinking is Broadway stage material in every sense. Fisher confesses hers and everyone else’s sins in a tale that reads like a blockbuster Hollywood plot. You will leave the theater feeling breathless and sore from laughter, and laughter is the tonic we all need and want in a theatrical production. Fisher’s fornicating and fighting with world famous people, plus the kaleidoscope of drugs and mental illness that were her creative engine, form a tight series of hysterical anecdotes, each leading into the next with gusto.
It’s really a wonder Fisher can still remember any of it, but remember she does and she dishes up your money’s worth. An offspring of the Hollywood gene pool, a pin-up for every lusty young boy in the late-70s and a brilliant stage performer, Fisher presents a juicy and formidable act, one that will be difficult to top this year. Buy Wishful Drinking tickets and be assured you will like it. It is impossible not to.
Wishful Drinking Director Tony Taccone, a 12-year veteran artistic director of the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, has been responsible for dozens of top shows. Taccone has staged world premiers and been acclaimed by the harshest critics in the world for his ingeniousness. Taccone is no slouch in the world of theater, and has a dynamite resume to complement Fisher’s explosive monologue.
Taccone’s 2004 premiere of Continental Divide was so successful it was transferred to the Barbican in London after impressing mightily at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Berkeley Repertory, La Jolla Playhouse, and England’s Birmingham Repertory. Quintessential pro Taccone was a faculty member on the board of Theatre Communications Group, at UC Berkeley, and has also functioned as a regional representative for the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. His contribution to Wishful Drinking has ensured that this production is a polished romp through the very best of Carrie Fisher’s eventful life. Cheers!
